Part 1: Experience Design

1.        Self-instruction – provide an instruction to let audience to experience me.
I suffered from ear disease that will cause tinnitus and dizziness, I would like to let others to experience these symptoms. The action of closing eyes is to allow audience to be more immersed in the feelings, what do you feel about tinnitus and dizziness? Similar to mindfulness practice that I usually execute, embrace with your negative feelings and sensation.
2.   Food portrait – matcha chocolate coated with ginger and white chocolate

The taste of ginger is spicy and bitter, matcha is fresh and brew, milk chocolate is sweet, white chocolate is even sweeter than milk chocolate.

Reasons I used these ingredients:
Ginger: Contradict with the taste of chocolate
chocolate: complex taste, use different types to represent bipolarity
Matcha: my preference flavour

These ingredients seem to be incompatible, suggesting a bipolar identity, but the actually taste were more mild as we imagine, the sweetness of chocolate has neutralize the pungent taste of ginger, brew of matcha has reduce sweetness in milk chocolate. Each ingredients symbolize a personality of myself, although they have their own attributes, they still incorporate to form myself. When audience first look at the chocolate, they do not know its flavor, just know it is a chocolate. The first bite will taste the ginger, the flavor of matcha will subsequently immersed, creating different layer of taste, implying the process of knowing me, you would not know my true personality unless you get along with me.
3. Color experience – Trolley grey

Idea development:
Idea 1 - We choose grey, as we would like to represent color blindness, allow audience to immersed in the world without color, also experience the indifference from society. But audience may misunderstood grey and color blindness as black, also we could not figure out how to highlight the indifference and the feelings of isolated.

Idea 2 – the feeling of puzzled, confusion and dullness, the difficulties to present your feelings, partially bound.
This idea is inspired by Sachiko Abe, The twenty-first paper cutting, the only peaceful moment is cutting paper. We decided using a net to imply the physical restriction only for the lower part of body. Audience was required to step inside the net and tired the ropes on the net, they can only focus doing their task like the action of Sachiko Abe.
Our making progress

However, we discovered that this installation do not convey the message of grey well, audience may be struggled and confuse what are they doing, they do not know this is representing grey.

Idea 3: neutrality, a grey area
Too difficult to present a feeling of absolute neutrality
Final idea: hazy and gloomy memories, could not let go of the past ( struggles)
Materials:
Road – cardboard as the base, tin-foil paper on top
Umbrella – sticked in ropes
Torch
Working progress
Final idea explain:
Umbrella and lights (torch) are imitating a tunnel, the light creates variation of light and shadow, umbrella symbolizes a dilemma as we used it only if we are on rainy day. The ropes attached on the umbrella creates an unique imaginary road for audience, only the audience could experience the trap inside road, creating a “semi-confined space”. The tin-foil paper create reflections of essence of memories. These set up establish misty atmosphere, encourage audience to embrace the emotions and wander through your memories.
The mist blurs the boundaries between past and present, also allow audience to connect their own story and explore layers of their past. We hoped bringing inspirations to audience.
Final artwork:
My own reflections:
Before I join AVA, I have never create an experience artwork, I am pleased to have an opportunity to expose this media. Although we faced challenges during working progress, such as material selection, corporation, how to present an abstract concept through a physical set-up, I still enjoy creation and experience others work, broaden my horizon. Artworks could be presented and convey beyond vision, it engage multiple senses to enhance the experience, considering the use of lighting, sounds, textures, scents, and even tastes to evoke emotions and deepen the connection with participants.
